My apologies for all the

My apologies for all the phony comments with links. There is some sort of virus or bot attacking the site. Any good programmers out there interested in working with MarkFiore.com Industries?

I hope to have this fixed soon. In the meantime, your comments will still register-- we'll just have to sort through the fake comments.

Thanks,

-Mark Fiore

As much as I hate to say it,

As much as I hate to say it, the most effective way of blocking spam (aside from installing a full-fledged spam filter, which should be done) is to replace any hyperlinks or URLs in submitted posts with '[link]' placeholders.

i.e. I am sohbet: scum of the Earth. Visit www-something-com.

becomes

I am [link]: scum of the Earth. Visit [link].

Spammers that become aware of the prohibition nearly always give up, since it's virtually impossible to spam profitably without links or URLs. Frequently, the only purpose of the spam is to boost link counts that will fool Google.

Since your attacker has a human drone working the CAPTCHA front-end, it's possible he'll give up when his links stop working.

Either way, you'll have to install an anti-spam firewall. There are several reasonably-priced ones (and even some good free ones) if you Google 'spam filtering for blogs', etc.

Thanks much for your

Thanks much for your suggestion. So you think these are real people doing this rather than an automated system? You're right, it would be easy enough to prohibit actual links.

There is definitely an

There is definitely an automated component to the attacker's set-up.

Typically what happens is a human attacker will visit the website and catalogue the site structure and posting architecture. They write a script that visits a random page and submits a new post complete with word poisoning (the random gibberish that accompanies the post) to try to thwart spam firewalls.

But the CAPTCHA front-end is incredibly painful to get around (especially one as well-designed as the reCAPTCHA you're using), and so typically what will happen is the script will pull out the image and send it off to a human 'drone' (making five cents a day in Turkey somewhere) whose sole job is to fill out thousands of CAPTCHA validations per day.

Your current attacker seems to be both pumping out traditional 'buy crap' spam and using your site to link-poison Google. (Page rank is determined largely by the number of incoming links, and so your site's popularity is essentially added to his own.)

Most blogging sites that allow links include special metatags in them that instruct search engines not to include the links in page ranking algorithms, but the safest bet is just to nuke them completely.

As to when the human attacker actually gets around to noticing that you've inoculated yourself against his automated set-up? It could be days, weeks, or months. My bet would be on 'days', since paying drones for CAPTCHA-thwarting is 'expensive' for sites that don't produce.

Good luck, Mr. Fiore. :)

(P.S. Glad to see the economy featuring in political limelight again, even if it is only because the Wall Street banks are in their death throes.)

Thank you SOOOOO much for your help in figuring this out. I'll block all links as soon as I finish today's animation. Stay tuned . . .

The Marx quote is taken out

The Marx quote is taken out of context. The context was the mid-1800s when opium was an over-the-counter painkiller. What he meant was religion is the [insert modern painkiller] of the masses, as a good thing, not that the religious are addicts. He also said in the same passage that "religon is the heart of a heartless world." Look it up.

Google might be advertising

Google might be advertising Handgun Training, but you get a cut of that don't you? Even if the rednecks continue to shoot their own kin, as long as you are making a buck, I say "bully to you!"

As a fiscally conservative

As a fiscally conservative rural gay gun-owning Democrat who grew up in the suburbs of a major U.S. city, I know only too well the low esteem in which my rural brethren are held by the urban elites of this nation.

The portrayal of rural people as hicks is nothing new. Obama has already made clear his belief that our economic fears lead us to cling to our guns and religion and make us nurse bad feelings about people we perceive to be different from ourselves.

The way Karl Marx put it was: Religion is the Opiate of the Masses.

Barack? Meet Karl.

Or have you two met before?

How many McCain points did

How many McCain points did you get for this troll post? Enough for the golf bag? Or are you aiming for one of the books? A coffee mug, perhaps?

You do know that if you ever

You do know that if you ever came out of the closet that your redneck neighbors would blast your arse, don't you? They think that you don't deserve to have any civil or even human rights. You are a clown.

I came out of the closet in

I came out of the closet in Arcata, California in 1971, wiseass.

YOUR PARTY SUPPORTED EIGHT

YOUR PARTY SUPPORTED EIGHT YEARS OF GEORGE W. BUSH! YOU JERKS SUPPORT TORTURE!! YOUR THE OUT OF TOUCH DUMBSHIT!! YOU AND YOUR WHOLE GODDAMNED PARTY!!! AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF GEORGE W. BUSH I CAN'T SEE HOW ANYONE CONSIDERS THEMSELVES A CONSERVATIVE!!! At least during the nineties I could understand how your point of view is different and that you have a right to it. BUT YOUR SO CALLED PHILOSOPHY HAS DONE SO MUCH DAMAGE TO THIS COUNTRY I CAN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!

YOUR GOING TO GET CRUSHED IN NOVEMBER AND YOU DESERVE IT!!!

I don't understand how this

I don't understand how this word "elite" is being used to in modern American politics. I mean how did liberals getting branded with this word when most of the rich and powerful are by their very nature conservative on fiscal issues at least. Actually it kind of pisses me off to be honest with you, am I a liberal "elite," is my sister, my father.

And the fact that just about everybody in power is an "elite" in the sense of the fact that they are all rich and well-educated.

Anyway, I hope after Obama wins and minorities out-number the dumbass, beer-guzzling red-neck crowd, we won't hear anymore of this garbage about "elites."

If "minorities" outnumber

If "minorities" outnumber anyone or anything, they will no longer be minorities you dumb sh*t. Guess you're not that "elite" after all.

You embody everything wrong with your entire party and its ideals. You think your opposition is "the dumbass, beer-guzzling red-neck crowd"? You and your party are so out of touch. This is why you can't win an election when it's almost even handed to you.

Normal people and elites alike oppose your entire value set, top to bottom. Get a clue. Actually, keep thinking your problem is "the dumbass, beer-guzzling red-neck crowd", it makes it easier for the realists to stay empowered.

Thank goodness morons like you and the rest of the socialist party you belong to can't get out of their own way long enough to do any real damage... Oh wait... thats right. We have Bill Clinton to thank for Osama Bin Laden..... oops.

The "dumbass, beer-guzzling

The "dumbass, beer-guzzling red-neck crowd" is the same crowd that thinks Obama is some sort of Muslim Manchurian candidate, that he wants to outlaw all guns, that he wants to raise taxes on the working and middle class, that gay marriage is one of the biggest problems our country faces today, that John McCain is a "maverick" who stands up to his party, and that two years as governor of the second-least populated state and mayor of a town of about 6,500 qualifies a person to be president while four years in the US Senate and eight years in the Illinois State Senate does not. These people are wrong because they are lied to on a constant basis so that others can manipulate them.

Oh, and here's another lie they believe: that Bill Clinton somehow is responsible for Osama bin Laden, particularly after a seven year long "War on Terror" under Bush that has produced a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan and bin Laden still hasn't been captured or killed.

Now, who's out of touch?

bushwacked's picture

Also, please note that

Also, please note that McCain said he would track down and capture bin Laden. I would think that if McCain were a GOOD American, he would simply pass on his inside information to capture bin Laden to his GOOD buddy, Bush, so that we could get bin Laden captured as soon as possible. Maybe McCain has such an ego, he has to keep his secret plan to capture bin Laden on close-hold, so he can get the credit. Of course, McCain is also going to "fight evil" whereever it is. Maybe McCain can send Palin over to Pakistan with an AK-47, to finish the job. If McCain dies in office, Palin, as a qualified hockey mom, is exactly what we need to face leaders of Pakistan, Israel, Russia, Iran. BE VERY AFRAID, THE END IS NEAR.

The problem is that if you

The problem is that if you get rid of all "elites" in Congress and in the White House, more than 75% of their population would be kicked out! And this data is a conservative one!

My Brainy Little Friend

My Brainy Little Friend ...

...has wisely driven to the very heart of the 'elitism' argument. Three cheers for eushiba!

H.G. Lardbottom is the public reaction to an increasingly incestuous enclave of families and universities deemed 'fit' to produce candidates for public service.

The same enclave is the crucible from which G.W. Bush and his father populated over 90% of their administration (no mere 75%, my dear eushiba)—setting them up to preside over disastrous agencies: FEMA, the FDA, the EPA, NSA, CIA, and the US Treasury Dept, to name but a few. It is a self-perpetuating enclave of affluence, power-idealism, and the widespread infection of a stagnant socioacademic meme touted as being the doctrine of 'the world's finest'.

'The world's finest' have systematically destroyed the US agricultural safeguards, bankrupted the treasury, consigned power to unchecked and woefully unethical intelligence agencies, filled US prisons to capacity, and relegated the US legal system to a bloated and fatalistic joke. Oh yes, the left knows that it was Bush, Cheney, Rove, and... maybe two or three other people that did all this by themselves, but middle- and right-America know better. And so H.G. Lardbottom's employers ask: why should we not be critical of anyone closely affiliated with this same stunted, self-congratulatory enclave?

If the theme of the election is 'change', Mr. Lardbottom reminds Americans to at least consider whether their new leader is being pulled from the same pool as over 90% of the people running the disastrous Bush administration (who will presumably continue to run the new one).

And then of course, we get into semantics of 'What precisely is the extent of the enclave?', 'What specific aspects lead to bad policymaking?', etc., which warrant further scrutiny.

Despite that it flies in the face of liberal thinking, I believe that any humble, brutally honest individual who would put the needs of the poor and underprivileged first, categorically refuse to spend more than was earned, champion bottom-heavy government, and neither start nor back down from a fight would do well as the 'leader of the free world', whether they were a Nobel laureate or Unca Jim Bob from Topeka.

Good Job. This one likens Congress to WWF.... or is the congress the WWF?...
But really, these people do exist in big numbers... and they would rather have someone to share a cheap beer with than a leader... that is until the price of gas is too expensive for that pick-up.
