I've seen tons of cartoons

I've seen tons of cartoons comparing the USA's dependence on oil to a person's drug addiction, but this one is the best! This oil-pusher character was a terrific idea!!

Nice Job! I'll be sending this one around.

Great cartoon Mark. I do

Great cartoon Mark. I do hope however that you and many of your posters don't get wrapped up in all the political partisan propaganda.

For example yes Oil companies are making record profits but what they aren't telling you is that that their current rate of return it will take another 3-5 years of profits at this rate just to break even on existing oil wells and refineries. The dairy farmers make more money off their investments than oil company’s do (on a percentage basis). Is there some sort of scheme to maximize their profits, probably but name a company that doesn’t? Its call capitalism. The difference is their size makes it seem so bad.

In regard to "drilling", our country is addicted to oil. It drives everything about our economy from our cars, to supermarkets, all the way down to the computers that let us communicate and the cartoons that you make. Alternative energy is becoming a realistic alternative but it will take hundreds of billions of dollars and several decades to do a complete conversion. What do we do in the mean time? Go back to living as farmers in our log cabins?

My post may seem "right wing" but actually I’m more moderate. It’s just that I actually have undergrad and graduate degrees in both Chemical and Environmental engineering so these are fields and problems I work on every day. To summarize, it’s taken over 100 years for us to get in this situation and its going to take time to get us out of it. The only chance we have of moving forward away from oil and still maintaining our standard of living is some sort of join plan. Plans that will ensure oil supplies stay stable (with drilling) while continuing to build/develop alternative energy. With alittle luck our grandkids will inherit a world free from oil addiction.

The alternative is to do the "political posturing" our country has gotten so good at over the last 20-30 years while we continue to do nothing. IE the BIG BAD oil companies are just trying to screw us so let’s screw them! Then suddenly be surprised when things don't work out quite so well.

OK, ignoring that your post

OK, ignoring that your post really is beside the point when it comes to this cartoon...

Assuming all of what you wrote is true, do you mean this to be an argument against weaning ourselves off of oil as our primary energy source? Because it seems to me that your points are the exact opposite: an argument in favor of starting **right now**. After all, yes it will take a while to make the total conversion. I agree you're right about that. So the sooner we start, the sooner we accomplish it.

And seriously, nobody is saying that the conversion will be so sudden that we make the change in a single day, or week, or even year, as you seem to be implying they are. If that's really what you think energy advocates are saying, then you're arguing against a strawman.

I'm not sure what McCain has in mind, since his verbal message has changed quite a bit and his website is short on specifics. But Obama's written (at http://www.barackobama.com/) and stated plan has quite a few details, and includes most of what you suggest. So really, you may think you're being the voice of reason, but we already know pretty much all of what you've posted here.

I should clarify that third

I should clarify that third paragraph. Here's a modest rewrite:

And seriously, nobody is saying that the conversion will be so sudden that we make the change in a single day, or week, or even year, as you seem to be implying they are. Of course there will be a transitional period where we're still using oil and gradually increasing our use of alternate energies. If you really think energy advocates are saying that we can just stop using oil cold turkey, then you're arguing against a strawman.

You, sir, are my hero. And

You, sir, are my hero.

And an engineer to boot, which is no doubt why your post smacks of reason and sense.

Ready yourself for the coming reprisals, among them, the classic:

If we had listened to Jimmy Carter, not a single drop of oil would be used today. And there would be no pollution. And car mufflers would belch out cotton candy for the kiddies. And... and...

The disillusioned:

If we put up some wind farms here, and some solar panels there, and tinker with fuel efficiency in cars, and screw in some compact fluorescents, we could shrug off this addiction in a decade.

And the obscure:

Those dang right-wingers; you can't reason with them. Why, I read in a poorly-sourced junk science report I found on some website just the other day that if it weren't for the oil companies, we could end our petrochemical dependence by May 2012! IT'S REAL SCIENCE, PEOPLE!!!!!! Links posted below.

He's lurking around here somewhere.

excellent love it!

*Great* cartoon, but

*Great* cartoon, but probably too subtle for the right-wingers. And I'm not being sarcastic about that. The whole subtext here about a druggie obviously on the verge of dying from an OD will go right over their pointed heads.

But to my little ol' liberal self, who appreciates subtle humor and innuendo, this is a *GREAT* cartoon. And the beauty part is that the right-wingers can't deny the whole addiction theme here, because they would make themselves and the GOP look (even more) foolish. After all, even President Persona Non Grata said that we were addicted to oil, back before they disowned him.

Yeah, what I heard going on

Yeah, what I heard going on between the Dept of Interior and people representing the oil companies was ridicolous, they weren't just trading money but sex and drugs as well. I thought this kind of crazy drug humor was hillarious. Anyway, this one was great.

Thanks, glad you liked it.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I didn't believe half of the reports about drugs/sex etc, but then I read the Interior Dept's Inspector General report, which was a real page-turner. Some samples:

Snorting meth off a toaster.

A supervisor handing out business cards to her sex toy/sex party side business.

You've pissed em off now

You've pissed em off now Mark, Great One!!! RECORD PROFITS EVERY QUARTER??? These guys run the world Mark, or at least they think they do. No national boundaries here, no boundaries here at all. Just think of where we could be if Reagan ( With Oils Hands down his pants) hadn't crushed Carters program into alternative energy sources in the 70's....Carl Rove & Cronies have been so good at smoke, mirrors and obfuscation to swing attention away from real issues. 1st it was flag burning, then gay marriage and swift boating, now offshore drilling (which won't make a spit in an ocean of difference - except in those deep pockets of 'The Man') But maybe those real issues have found a way to be heard. No wonder McPain wanted to cancel the debate....
At any rate keep up the good work, we need you to be heard.
Have a nice day, but remember, ENTROPY is a constant process, and it's coming to an internal combustion engine near you soon!!

That was great. These big oil companies will do anything in their power to make a buck. Destroy the land, sea, even the very air that we need to live on. Your cartoon hit it right on the head these rich oil people will stop at nothing in order to make billion, upon billions of dollars. These oil companies think their are above the laws of the land and can drill anywhere they want to. And these companies get way it too.

Drill baby drill, what a great piece Mark. These big oil companies just keep making billions upon billions of dollars. These people would lie, steal, and cheat their own mother for a buck. Drill baby drill destory the land, the wildlife, all in the name of money. Telling these goons to stop drilling is like McCain trying to fix the economy, it not going to happen. so to all you big oil companies drill baby drill in your own back yard not mine.
