I just came across this site, and I like it. All the arguments provoke thought and that’s a good thing. However, I pretty much do not agree with anyone totally. Since this is an opinion blog; I will give you mine. For starters, the whole argument is a bit pointless. I would compare it to abortion. Regardless of all the talks, debates, protesting, ect… nothing really changes to make one side happy or the other. For all the republicans reading this, you had a R- president, congress, senate, and a couple added supreme court judges and nothing changed, but that’s the republican hot button issue and that was their chance. Yet everything basically stayed the same. The main reason, $$$! The medical industry is to big and to wealthy to go up against. Their money would largely go towards the D-party if the R’s put to much regulation on them. Democratic party has just recently been put into power so the jury is still out on “how much more pro-abortion” they will get. I believe abortion will get less regulated with this party in power now, and the reason? To get more women on the D-side and prop up the medical industry for more donations. On the other side of the coin - All you democrats, everyone hated the patriot act (which I do too), Gitmo, troops in Iraq, ect… and yet nothing really has changed. The party before Obama gained more power and that’s something that this administration is not going to give up. Unfortunately, the next president after Obama, will continue this same trend and that trend is to gain more power just as each has tried to do. Two things control both parties, MONEY & POWER - period…
Anyways, Back to guns!!! I personally do not like to much regulation in any aspect of government, but that’s not going to happen. Each year, each party tries to gain more power. I would ask you all to ponder, if 1,3, 10 or all the passengers on 9/11 had been carrying, would all that took place on that horrific day turn out as it did? Would a plane full of people, been able to be taken over with 1 inch box cutters? I doubt it. That being said, should there simply be no rule of law on guns? I think some rules are appropriate. I had read on this site an analogy about 10 year olds buying guns at 7-11, I have to agree with him/her, that would not be a wise move. I would also ask, if only police and military carry guns (in our civilized country) how would the events recently played out in the holocaust museum turned out if security guards didn’t have guns? How many more lives may have been lost? I’ve been to states that have liberal laws on guns; I have walked into stores and seen people carry guns openly; I personally felt secured about it. My thoughts were, if there is 1 or 2 crazies in here (in the stores) right now and they are about to snap, they will not make it long. There is something about an exposed gun that deters most criminals. If I were a criminal and I had a choice to go after the guy with the gun or the guy without one, the choice is obvious. I have no political sides to be on or be against - both are equally as bad. If I could give one analogy about the guns issue, I would give this: Nuclear weapons - Enemies of ours with them haven’t pulled the trigger in fear of us retaliating the same way. There is a certain “fearful respect” you gain by having the capability of retaliating with equal or greater force.
Lastly, to the person who wrote about how socialism is a good thing… Really? Have you asked people from socialist countries if they concur? In my college days, I had professors talk about how socialism would work if it were a perfect society, but there is one major flaw with that, none of us are perfect, and we definitely do not live in a perfect society.
Good commentary here, but we must remember one important thing that few talk about. The architects of the constitution guaranteed legal gun ownership as a right. They did this to protect us FROM government. There will always be bad people who do bad things with guns, but we should not imagine that extreme gun restriction will solve that problem. Reasonable restriction should include criminal background checks, but that will never stop criminals from acquiring guns. So long as there is poverty, poor education, injustice and social inequity, crime will exist. Banning guns only guarantees that law-abiding citizens won't have guns. Gun-ownership rights are essential for maintaining a balance of power between honest good citizens and the criminals on the streets, and are absolutely essential for defending against the criminals in government.
i think a possible solution would be to remove the protection the manufacturers have been given this would force them to be more selective of who they sell to. However you would have counter this by saying to them if you can prove you didn't sell this gun to this person or to the legal dealer who sold it to them your off the hook this way black market guns are not included in the witch hunt.
For those who are arguing that the public must be armed in order to resist tyrannical government, consider this: The Weavers and the Koresh people had huge arsenals. That didn't stop the government from running roughshod over them.
The government has everything from magunms to nuclear bombs. As things stand now, if the government wanted to wipe you out, you'd be wiped out, period. So if that's really what you're worried about, you need to stop worrying about arming yourselves and start working on a way to DISARM the government.
Fool...
The insurgents in Iraq/Afghanistan are basically armed
civilians. Last I heard, they were giving our Marines
an absolute b!tch of a time.
Israel's military has been stymied by armed civilians (Hamas,
anyone?) for decades now. (Where's those roughshod riders
when you need 'em???)
If you'd be supportive of a government which you believe
would nuke its own citizens, then I don't want you or
anyone like you anywhere near positions of power, or even
a voting booth.
Somehow I think that if the U.S. military can't "run roughshod"
over the insurgents in Iraq/Afghanistan, and the Israelis have failed to do it with THEIR insurgents - well, I'd wager Americans would be just as difficult to tame by a rogue government. (Unless they all magically became pussified liberals like yourself.) You need to stop watching the idiot box 24/7 (when you're not hanging
around on liberal blogs, that is) and educate yourself about reality, and human nature.
Yep.It's really embarrassing to be caught with bad spelling.
Especially to people from the former Colonies of Britain.
But being Yanks, I'm sure you don't care about anyone but yourselves, right?
No it's just our government run school system we have here. As long as it's close even you pass to the next grade. Can't hold Johnny back and make our schools look bad or Ted "I've got cancer" Kennedy will have to come up with another government school program.
But thanks for your concern! I just think your jealous being stuck over across the pond cause your family didn't have the courage to sail over here. But then whom are we to judge?
Obama is a tyrent. and if trys to take my guns than he is trying to take my freedom. the 2nd amendment says the right to bear arms. so if he comes to try and takes my guns i will defend my freedom like the patriots of the Revolution.
lol, if you're trying to make it seem like a lot of people agree with you, at least try spelling tyrant correctly in one of your posts. Identical misspellings is a tiny bit conspicuous.
I think obama is a tyrent, and if he trys to take my guns he might as well take away my freedom. Because the 2nd amendment says the right to bear arms. So if Obama comes i will defend my freedom, just like ansestors in the revolution.
I agree guns should be taken away from the law abiding citizen,we live in such a civilized world these days that we don't need guns anymore,hu wonder why they want them taken away if we live in such a civilized world you'd think they wouldn't even give guns a second thought like you don't give a bread stick a second thought because you don't expect someone to get beaten with it eh,strange why they want them banning considering it is such a pieceful world out there,
anyway just look how safe the UK isnow they have banned guns a marvelous place and very safe,
for anyone stupid enough please don't come to the uk and think it is really safe, please do bring a stab proof vest
You guys need to worry less about people owning guns, and more about how people become violent and hateful towards eachother in the first place.... This is just another ploy by the powers that be to initiate class warfare. Wake up, make your own decisions and stand by them. Stop using the law as a weapon against your fellow men. Conservatives and Liberals might not always agree, but I would think everyone could understand the principles of Liberty. And the government telling you what weapons you can and can't own is a long way from it. A free man is a dangerous thing, live with it a----s.
Yeah. I agree with you . Liberty is important
Conservatives need to get over gay marriage , stem cell research drugs and abortion rights.
Liberty.
Don't you agree
I would like to buy a pistol. How much? What uses does it have?
I would like to buy an Automatic rifle. How much? How much damage can I cause?
I would like to buy a Rocket launcher. How much? Can I hit an aircraft with this version?
I would like to buy a Nuke. How much? What part of America can I detonate it on to cause the most suffering?
As you can see. Legalization of some weapons would be illogical. The sheer possibility that even one of them (in the case of a nuke) ending up in the hands of crazies would be disastrous.
Also, I don't fully buy the argument that the public should have the right to bear arms. Judging from the comments even on this blog, many seem unstable. I am not American so perhaps I don't understand the mentality. From my perspective, many comments seem more than just unstable, they appear simple and irrational, and very aggressive.
Actually, there are more guns per capita in Canada than in the United States. That just goes to show that the number of guns really doesn't have much to do with crime levels.
I'll have to check that out. Interesting how their is little to no gun culture in mainstream Canadian society (I've never even seen a gun). Maybe efforts should be focused on what drives people to use them for the wrong reasons?
most gun shows like wac(wa arms collectors) submit a background check to allow you to purchase weapons. its liberal f--ks like you that dont do any research that are going to get weapons taken away from everyone.
What a load of BS. Next time you are out in a public place, look at the people around you. Try to point out which ones are gun owners. You'll have a tough time. Why? Because we're just like you. We are not crazy. We are not blood thirsty. We don't want to shoot people. We are normal, everyday people just like you. And as far as the liberal VS. conservative thing goes-that's a great job you are doing. You are both equally bad. Petty squabbling between parties gets us nowhere.
I herd this personally from a meth dealer in winnipeg manitoba.
I love it when people arnt allowed to carry guns , it means I have power over everyone except cops, and I can just shoot cops. and if they make guns illegal everywhere in the world and make it IMPOSSIBLE for anyone but cops and military to buy guns legally or illegally it wont matter, gangsters like me will take machinery courses and make our own guns and ammunition , even primers and powder aren't hard to make if you have the equipment, which costs less then 5 000 (canadian dollars) , thats less then 3 days worth of money dealing rocks & ice (local street names for crack cocaine and methanphetamine) on a bad day. and if i can make my own guns i can learn to put heat tempered steel rods on a lathe and make bullets that can go through even III-A body armor (my later research showed this to be what SWAT teams wear) and if im making handguns why not make full auto, its cheaper and easier. so now i can make an SMG (a kind of small machine gun you can hide) every day in my garage for less then $100 (canadian dollars.)
he then bragged about his skill in making guns and pulled out three what i could only assume were machine gun pistols. he refused to let me take any pictures so i can only describe them as a large box like handgun about 25 centimeters in length with a grip on the front and large magazine(about 30 centimeters in length) the second and third about the same size as a common handgun with a very ugly box like look. i can only assume these are fully automatic with high capacity magazines loaded with armor piercing bullets. i asked him if he had ever tried firing it and he said he had fired them at vests to make sure they would pierce armor. i only hope he hasn't taught any of his friends to make these weapons or been distributing them among the criminal underground here.
i believe this proves Exactly how effective taking guns away from the population is. this criminal is now even more dangerous then he would have been if the government had Given him a handgun.
It isn't wise to hang around with meth dealers, as they tend to be violent and unstable.
As Fiore says, guns don't kill people, bullets do! Bear in mind that EVERYONE who isn't insane favors gun control, the only argument is at what level do we control guns. If you doubt me, ask yourself if we should allow 10 year old boys to purchase automatic weapons at the 7/11. I would have bought one at 10, Of course we don't want 10 year olds buying guns - that's gun control. What about 12, 13, 17, 25, all we argue is the level of control. The majority of folks are safe to own guns, only criminals and crazies should be stopped. So, how do we identify them? Answer it, Fiore nailed it, WE DON'T! You can sell anything to anyone at a gun show, and you better believe that's where the crazies shop.
We as a nation need to get guns under control.
I feel that private citizens MUST own guns, because with loonies like Bush and Cheney if we weren't armed they would soon have their unconstitutional army of foreign mercenaries enforcing serfdom on the US Population. Only our guns protect us, particularly since Bush and Cheney have not only violated the Second Amendment but many others with impunity. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees that no foreign soldiers will serve in the US Military. If you look back, Britian was able to control her empire largely by employing foreign mercenaries to control the population. That was the true reason for the amendment, to guarantee that US Armies are made of US Citizens. It is significant that the Soviet Union and a number of other countries have copied our 2nd amendment, prohibiting foreign troopps. The prohibition of foreign troops was one of the main controls on Stalin. Stalin was a loonie and amoral as Bush, but unlike Bush he was not allowed to violate the constitution. He tried, but unlike Americans, the Russians stopped him. It was the Russian Army itself that refused to kill Russians, and refused to allow non Russians to join. Out army is as culpable as our COngress and Supreme Court for allowing Bush to break the law.
umm..Bush didnt violate the 2nd amendment. Bill Clinton did (along with others). Bush also isnt even in Power. Obama is. THe most anti-gun, anti-constitution president in history
No, I'm sorry, you are an idiot. Normally I don't name call, but to assert that Obama is anti-constitution, or that he is the most anti-constitution president, shows that you either know nothing about the Constitution, know nothing about other presidents, know nothing about Obama, or (I suspect) simply know nothing. A major concern of those drafting the Constitution was limiting presidential power, which Bush subverted in a number of ways. His excessive use of signing statements was an attempt to place himself above the law by allowing himself to be exempt from newly passed laws. Bush okayed illegal spying on Americans, then sought to make it legal retroactively. Bush violated the universally held rigth for prisoners to seek counsel, to know what they are accused of. Bush subverted the electoral process in two elections. Bush violated US and international laws against torture. Recently leaked memos show that Bush's DOJ team was preparing the way for allowing the military to invade the homes of Americans, to imprison Americans without warrants, to kill American citizens in the name of fighting terror--all of which violates the Posse Comitatus Act as well as basic decency.
President Bush and the current conservative movement behave like enemies of the U.S. They love America, but they hate any freedom that does not directly benefit big business. Please pull your head out of your rectum and learn something before you spread lies and idiocy.
Oh dear god, you can't be serious???? I'm no fan of Bush, because I'm a conservative, but holy hell, I don't know where to begin with this madness.
There were a bunch of things he did wrong, but Chancellor Obama is a protector of the Constitution??? Just wow. I wish I lived in your world. I would love to be able to bend my mind to suit whatever reality I chose.
Hey, let's avoid the name-calling and discuss like grownups here. I don't want this place to devolve into what most other comment areas become. And no running by the pool!
just call him what he is he's more sociallist than most commies . he is the book 1984 people ... the lies spewed on this site are just crazy . and youhave the balls to call gun owners crazy .
Have you read the book Ninteen Eighty-Four recently?? Because, see, the thing is, is that Ninteen Eighty-Four had a sort of extremely fascist government (you know, always listening to you, secret prisons, etc.), and you seem to think he's a communist, you should be alluding to is George Orwell's other dystopian novel, Animal Farm. Literary references should be made correctly if you are going to make them, please and thank-you.
Ironically, George Orwell was a democratic socialist, so I'm sure the man wouldn't appreciate your use of his ideas to knock down someone he would have probably liked quite well.
There is nothing wrong with socialism. It is actually a good thing. Hell, we could not run the US without socialism. Roads are socialistic, so is radio band width, libraries, courts, police, water control... the list goes on.
Without these socialist policies, it could cost you 50$ just to drive to work in your own car on toll roads...
Your own house is socialism... the Father goes to work and comes home and feeds the kids. He is not allowed to slave drive the kids, and must send them to school to be educated so that they cannot become enslaved by the father.
Socialism is good stuff. Wake up and get rid of that propaganda that was implanted into your mind by the corporate government. Obama was elected by the PEOPLE, not the corporations... you are just spewing corporate propaganda without knowing it.
I ignore most opinion in most places because it is uninformed and half baked, fed by the corporate media (notice I didn't call it the liberal media). I am a big supporter of the Second Amendment and the right to own guns. I also support a limited amount of gun control. There is no reason why an average citizen needs an automatic weapon. Period. Semi-automatics are fine with me. High-capacity magazines are fine also, because the amount of bullets you have in a weapon does not increase the lethality of that weapon. I prefer revolvers myself. I can hit what I aim at, I don't need extra rounds to do it. Background checks are fine with me and should never be stopped. I want to keep criminals from walking into a gun store or a gun show and buying firearms. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Texas you cannot buy a firearm anywhere legally without a Federal background check. People go to gun shows in Texas looking for good deals, not because they might find something they can't get elsewhere.
That said, I wanted to address the person who stated socialism is so good. Socialist ideas created the welfare state we live in, complete with lazy damned people who have lived on mine and your tax money for generations and never had a real job. The "corporate government" didn't end with Bush. Obama was put into office by the same group of companies that control the media in all its forms and build weapons for the military. As soon as Obama became a Senator he became part of the corporate controlled government. Money talks, BS walks. All successful politicians are bought off by the same companies with exceptions related to their political slant. Those of you who don't believe that need to look at what companies supported all of the major candidates for the last Presidential (s)election and you will see that they are all connected by the same umbilical cord. Expect nothing from Obama that differs from the agenda the corporations currently have in store for us.

What a load of BS. Next time
What a load of BS.

Shut up you f---ot.

If that's your answer to that guy's post, then
I have even more contempt for anti-gunners than
I did before (if that's possible.)
It isn't wise to hang around
Out army is as culpable as our COngress and Supreme Court for allowing Bush to break the law.
umm..Bush didnt violate the
umm..Bush didnt violate the 2nd amendment. Bill Clinton did (along with others). Bush also isnt even in Power. Obama is. THe most anti-gun, anti-constitution president in history
No, I'm sorry, you are an
No, I'm sorry, you are an idiot.
Oh dear god, you can't be
Oh dear god, you can't be serious???? I'm no fan of Bush, because I'm a conservative, but holy hell, I don't know where to begin with this madness.
There were a bunch of things he did wrong, but Chancellor Obama is a protector of the Constitution??? Just wow. I wish I lived in your world. I would love to be able to bend my mind to suit whatever reality I chose.

Hey, let's avoid the name-calling and discuss like grownups here. I don't want this place to devolve into what most other comment areas become. And no running by the pool!

just call him what he is
just call him what he is he's more sociallist than most commies . he is the book 1984 people ... the lies spewed on this site are just crazy . and youhave the balls to call gun owners crazy .
Have you read the book

"Liberal: a power worshipper without power."

There is nothing wrong with
There is nothing wrong with socialism.
Oh please... I ignore most
Oh please...
