I support 1492 Immigration

I support 1492 Immigration Reform! Columbus seems pretty illegal to me and everyone entering the country thereafter.

Mark is a funny ManQ!

Mark is a funny ManQ!

How about Mexico? They have

How about Mexico? They have tougher immigration laws then we do.

Why don't the same rules apply to them? Why are they not a police state?

I'm not sure about all these

I'm not sure about all these comments, mudslinging, etc. etc.

The bottom line is: Illegal aliens need to get the hell out of this country, and that is all there is to it.

MY grandparents had to do all the paper and red tape to become citizens, and they HAd to learn to speak English, too. At least the ones born here, did. They didn't bring a bunch of relatives over illegally-- they didn't make all the rest of us get discriminated against because we are NOT "Bi-lingual".

It still remains to be this: Get out IF you are not a citizen. You can visit here, fine. You can work here, with a green card. But you can't vote, can't bring your buddies over by truckload to work them to death. And cost the taxpayers money by a) loading up the emerency rooms of the hospitals b) not having insurance or driver's licenses, and getting into accidents with citizens- c. shooting our public servants. Heck, Mexico doesn't even allow non-citizens to own property. I don't think WE should either.

The Arizona folks shouldn't HAVe to be taking all this flak over their attempts to do what is the Federals JOB. NONE of this poisonous diatribe back and forth would be occurring if the LAW of our Country was being enforced.

And, if Homeland Security can do a deep body cavity of any American citizen on any pretext they want to-- then, why not the Arizona cops?

Wake up, folks, smell the coffee! The illegals start off by flouting our laws - what makes you think they will suddenly change and become law abiding citizens? Leopards don't change their spots. We got enough crooks of our own, in and out of politics. Use this energy you have to resent the Arizona folks trying to stem the tide-- and put it into getting the illegals OUT of our country. They are poisoning us to death, if it's not already too late.

The immigration issue is not

The immigration issue is not as simple as enforcing existing laws new or old.

Economies that allow for us to purchase foods year round at prices the rest of the world haven't seen in decades rests on the cheap, illegal labor avaliable to all US farming operations, private and corporate.

Custodial, child care, restaurant workers, construction as well as all other jobs that require a low pay, under educated employee to provide a service that allow US residents to receive a premium product at a value price also take advantage of the immigrant work force.

Without the continuous stream of illegal workers from Central America, Asia, Canada, Europe, Canada and yes, Mexico the current economic downturn would not only be exacerbated but amplified by a factor that would cripple any hope of recovery.

Everyone in this country who is not a Native American Indian is the decedent of an immigrant. The issue is not one of exclusion, the sealing of our borders or the prosecution of those simply seeking a better life. Most immigrants work hard, pay taxes and abide by the laws of their communities.

Anyone who with the waive of a magic wand that would remove 'every illegal' from the country would be shocked to wake up in a world where the trash didn't vanish, where building houses was suddenly 4 to 5 times their current cost, grocery store visits would become 40 to 50% of their total income and many in the workforce would suddenly be absent having to care for their own children.

What is needed is a comprehensive overhaul of the immigration and naturalization policies of the US and proper compensation for the jobs immigrants perform in the US that provide everyday Americans with the affordable, high standard of living we have come to enjoy.

I am a first generation US citizen. I hold an advanced degree. If my mother had not served popcorn at the cinema and cleaned houses in the 40's after illegally entering this country, I would not be here paying my taxes, voting and being an educator.

Misinformation, hate, fear and violence are not answers.

If you hire people that you

If you hire people that you should not, then you don't deserve to enjoy success in business; you are bad American. If you know 'a friend' that is doing it or that someone is doing it and don't report them, then you have no right to complain as America becomes a 3rd world country. I have no problem with a system that would make 'everyone' prove that they are legal when they take a job. The only problem I have with it is that 'water seeks its own course' and you would have to 'hang a nun in the square' if you caught people hiring people unlawfully without the card and paying them 'under the table'. Also, there must be fair practices instituted that allow hospitals to survive like making people pay up front when they take their kids 'with the sniffles' to the ER. This is a problem that did not happen overnight and will take time to fix, but we must start a multi-pronged approach right now. Whatever you allow, you teach. The REAL danger is that a card required to check citizenship (a good idea) will be used as a trojan horse to help people accept the idea of amnesty. ("Oh come on...just one more time ok?") This will virtually GUARANTEE that no republican will every again be elected as even a dogcatcher anywhere as long as America survives, which it won't, at least in the way we all love it.
Even republican-haters (or their children) will regret the loss.

Police State Pete is a

Police State Pete is a little runt and coward with a Napoleon Complex. Give any a$$hole a badge and a gun and he'll use it to show just how f@#king tough he is by abusing, terrorizing and harassing those that don't have a badge or a gun -- you know, regular folks trying to live their lives in peace without a hassle from The Man. Where did the Bill of Rights go? I guess it's just a pretty concept that they keep in a museum somewhere.

Hi: Police State Pete is a

Hi: Police State Pete is a mega exaggeration. How come nobody wants to talk about the fact that farmers in southern Arizona are afraid to go onto their property because of Drug and human traffickers. Last Friday a deputy sheriff was shot near Phoenix by an illegal alien armed with an AK-47. Jan Brewer is doing the right thing by cracking down on this problem.I wish Arnold Schwarzenegger would show the same type of back bone. In L.A. there is a city ordinance which requires home improvement stores to provide water and restroom facilities to illegal day laborers. Why can't Uncle Sam supply some ICE agents? We already have a big enough problem with homeless Americans yet the purveyors of Political Correctness never want to do anything for them. It appears not to be a good cause to the liberal types. All they care about is the third world. Illegal aliens this past weekend were fighting for a right they don't actually have. The right to come to America illegaly. Our social services are being drained by these people who think they can traipse across the border anythime they want. I'm sick and tired of being branded a racist for not liking it. This is the United States of America not the Estados Unidos de Mexico. If Amercia were Star Trek illegal immigrants from Mexico would be the Tribbles. This because like Tribbles most of what they do is breed and eat. I think Gavin Newsome is out there in left field making San Francisco a sanctuary city. I was disgusted that he among others wants to boycott the state of Arizona. It's because of people like him that San Francisco is sometimes called: San Franfreako, San Franpsycho, and San Fransicko. We've been having some of the drug cartel viloence spill over onto our side of the border because nothing is done about this problem. We need some of our politicians to stop pandering to all the pressure groups and show some hutzpa. Can you believe I'm also a Democrat? C U L8R!!!!!!!!!

Wow mark, You really reach a

Wow mark,
You really reach a broad audience. Most 'liberal' blogs are preaching to the choir but clearly a lot of right wing bigots view your site. congrats! It's nice to see that you are getting these jingoistic, racist melanophobes to confront their hypocrisy.

Immigrants do pay taxes. They pay into FICA and never see the benefits. Some estimates are a high as 13 billion in dollars they pay yet never collect on. And they work hard, have strong family values, are law abiding (but for that pesky border crossing)and add to our culture. We need to figure out a way to let them in. We need to pay the skilled workers among them a skilled wage so that middle class wages are not diluted. Letting them become citizens would lift us all up.

Why do conservatives fear immigration reform? One reason. The new citizens will not vote for the bigots that tried to keep them out. So they keep them as slave laborers with no rights. They can't vote and can still garden and are therefore no threat.

And you have to dial '1' for English because the folks who dial '2' spend money, and no corporation with investors is going to turn down a cash paying customer just because they don't share a common language. Cash is the common language. So when you dial '1' try to understand that it's good for the economy.

The overwhelming number of

The overwhelming number of immigrants are fine. They worked hard in their home country and now in ours. They followed the rules, stayed out of trouble and were allowed to enter our country and are now rightly entitled to all of the rights they earned.

Illegal immigrants on the other hand, broke the law, snuck into this country uninvited and may or may not have other undesirable and maybe dangerous characteristics.

Now many of them march in the streets demanding that they get all of the rights that the legal immigrants have. They try to hide the fact that there is a huge difference between them and the law abiding ones and for some unknown reason many foolish people here fall for this hopefully not realizing the harm they are doing to future applicants to our country.

These naive people don't realize that they, not Arizona, are the biggest threat to future immigration.

Keywords: naive,

Keywords: naive, illegal

What part of illegal do you not understand?

Mike Fiore, you're a weenie for making this bogus representation of what's happening in AZ.

Hey, PSP. Me thinks you're

Hey, PSP.

Me thinks you're in the wrong field. If you wanted to arrest illegals and keep them out of the U.S. then you should've applied for INS or the Border Patrol. D'oh!

*sidenote: It looks as though AZ is telling the federal government that it doesn't like the way it is doing its job.

What about the homeless

What about the homeless people? They might be homeless because their job got taken by an illegal alien. Obviously homeless people don't come with documentation, so according to this law, they will be deported to Mexico, or kept in prison forever??!!

I agree. I don't know why

I agree. I don't know why we have all of these dumb immigration laws anyway. We should have open borders and let everyone in and tell all of those people in other countries that are trying to come here to forget about following the rules and waiting their turn. Stop being a chump and wasting time learning a trade and keeping out of trouble.

Drop out of school, get enough money anyway you can to hire a coyote and come on over. Who are we to pick and choose anyway? Let's allow everyone to come here regardless. That's what Mexico and all of the rest of the world does right?

What's the difference between an illegal and a legal alien anyway? They're are all foreigners anyway right? Why complicate things with minor details like following the law?

Thanks for the cartoon. You really cleared things up for me.

Yeah, that's who I want

Yeah, that's who I want voting here... Some ding-bat that can't see any shades of grey between requiring -actual- probable cause for police action and the anarchy of a totally open border.

Isn't America lucky you

Isn't America lucky you don't get to decide who votes then.

What kind of crazy rednecks

What kind of crazy rednecks are we anyway? Passing a law that says the police are supposed to enforce the law? Nuts! Stating that when police have a probable cause to believe a crime has been committed they must investigate further? Insanity! Oh that "Police State Pete". What a Nazi.

I don't know if it was

I don't know if it was intentional, but I thought it was clever to mention the tumbleweed. It too, is an immigrant to this country(from Russia).

You stupid Americans! The

You stupid Americans! The bottom ten percent of Mexico moves into your country and you argue among yourselves about it? You are an amazing spectacle! You deserve to be slaves.

Are you an angry fearful

Are you an angry fearful racist european (no offense to open minded, free thinking Europeans)? What rock have you been living under to carry such an absurd way of thinking? And of course you try to remain Anonymous in your comment as a way of hiding behind your hate/fear. Try this on for size, "I'm really scared of people different from me"

For a moment change the nationality to Irish, Jewish, Italian, Russian, German, Greek, or any other ethnic group for that matter -the same ignorant fear and hate was applied to each group of immigrants. Hate and fear are mind blowers, sorry if no one has told you yet but your mind has blown a gasket!

The very first ships leaving European countries to explore the "new world" were loaded with convicts and refugees escaping persecution from their oppressors. Inhabited lands (Including Africa, Australia and American continents which includes Mexico by the way) were invaded and colonized by English criminals shipped out to Australia and Africa.

Any 10% of Mexico is kinder, more dedicated and hard work to improve their family's quality of life. The cultural reinforcement, family values and work ethic enhances the social fabric of the US and any country lucky enough to have this human population participate in the economy. How do you think businesses like Walmart is able to charge lower prices than Smiths or Albertsons (which get passed on to consumers)? By abusing the "legal status" of undocumented immigrants through underpaid labor of course! How do we benefit from their willingness to cross this or any border, risk their lives to get paid less than half of what "legals" would require? Does anyone recognize the taxes paid every time a purchase is made, and like legal citizens, the taxes taken out of their under sized paychecks?

Open your eyes or close them but take your fear and hate somewhere else, like in a cave with a hungry bear or in a jungle with wild beasts. Cynthia J.

Yes, the people of Arizona

Yes, the people of Arizona (where I've lived as a perfectly legal immigrant for 20+ years) have lost there collective minds. I am a US citizen though I don't sound like one: if I'm asked by the police to demonstrate my legality, I shall politely remind the officer that I am not required to carry proof. Much good will it do me.

In my time here I've brought several $M of outside business into the economy of good ol' AZ, but if the state keeps on its present path of social and economic self-destruction, I won't be living here much longer.

Please don't come to Idaho.

Please don't come to Idaho. We'll hate you here as well. California is your best bet. There you can live with the crime, filth, illegals, gangs, and debauchery enjoyed by millions of Californicators everyday.

In Australia the whole place

In Australia the whole place is a police state and if you look different and can;t speak English to well its off to a detention center for you heck they even put Australians in there for more than a year and it cost them a fortune in compensation JM Queensland Australia

These are really stupid.

These are really stupid. Cartoons are supposed to make a point using humor. Where's the humor? This guy won a Pulitzer for this? Doesn't give me much faith in that prize.

The idea that cartoons are

The idea that cartoons are supposed to make a point using humor is stupid.

As an example, cartoons were used to educate children in the 50's about the very serious issue of Nuclear Attack and the consequences of such an attack.

View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz3t4LcXwtE

I guess they got the point across with the absolute humor of something as hilarious as total annihilation and slow death by radiation.

Did I say absolute humor? I meant absolute horror...

I won't even go into the idea that cartoons are excellent vehicles for getting past the social and mental blocks people have about being lectured...

I have noticed a lot of

I have noticed a lot of people stating that immigrants take jobs...which is true....but is the issue the immigrants or the fact that businessess are willing to hire illegal immigrants because they are not only cheaper but usually perform at a higher level of quality...

There are three primary

There are three primary issues: (1) Global Labor Arbitrage, (2) Invisible (and conveniently ignored) Back-End costs, and (3) Population Explosion.

(1) Having illegals displace Americans from formerly middle class jobs such as construction and driving down wages for the lower classes is a huge issue. (It helps the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.) Basically, they are helping to transform the nation into an impoverished, third world country by pushing wages down to third world levels. In essence, it is part of our merging our nation's labor market with that of the third world. Anyone who has studied basic economics knows that when the supply of labor increases dramatically relative to the demand for labor, the price point, wages, must decrease.

(2) Illegal immigration (as well as global labor arbitrage in general) carries with it some invisible and conveniently ignored back-end costs. In other words, their cheap labor really is not that cheap. Our society has to pay for the costs of any welfare they receive such as housing assistance, actual welfare, health care costs (a huge problem), education costs for the children of illegals, and criminal justice costs (in addition to the costs of criminal acts done against Americans whose cost can be hard to measure). They are NOT paying as much money in taxes as they consume. Logic dictates that someone earning $6/hour must be paying far less in taxes if at all.

In our country, American citizens are basically going to be provided with health care, education, and often welfare. So it makes sense to pay Americans more money to do those jobs the illegals are doing then to have the Americans be unemployed while also paying for the health care and education of the illegals. (It's cheaper to provide those services for one family than for two families.)

(3) Another issue that is overlooked is that of Population Explosion. Right now our nation's population is on track to explode to about 450 million by 2050. A higher population is bad because it increases the strain on the nation's environment (like clean air and clean water?) and also decreases the amount of resources per capita. Freshwater sources, land, high quality farmland, oil, coal, natural gas, large tracts of forest that provide timber and help clean the air, etc. only exist in limited finite quantities. When the demand for these resources (more people) increases the price for these resources must also increase (ever wonder why the price of gasoline has increased over the past several decades)? Guess which Americans will end up suffering from the higher costs and decreased standard of living that results from having a higher population? The lower classes and the middle class, of course.

The illegal immigrants have children in the United States (often called anchor babies) who are American citizens. This is also a problem related to mass legal immigration.

To learn more about immigration and population explosion, see this video. In fact, no discussion of immigration should occur with out first viewing this video:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5871651411393887069#

So, you see, opposition to mass legal immigration and illegal immigration is not all about "being afraid" and racism and xenophobia. Rather, there are several legitimate economic reasons for it.

Well, regarding your point

Well, regarding your point 1. That's how the Free Market works and the bottom line for a company is what counts in a pure Capitalistic set up with no governmental oversight.

Which I do believe is something that the Republicans favour? Less government and oversight, more leaving things to the Free Market?

So their complaints about the consequences rings somewhat hollow to me.

As for point 2, partially true, then again, then don't collect social security even though they do pay into that pot iirc. Then there are various state based taxes with regards to pay, which they also cannot claim due to their status. Getting a tax refund is also a no go. So it's a blade which cuts both ways.

Lastly point 3, on the other hand, in order to keep things like social security solvent, you need X amount of workers to replace the ones who retire, who are living longer due to improved medical care, thus requiring longer pay outs etc. It's a fairly common problem throughout the Western world with regards to such programs, and considering that most Western nations do not exactly have the best of birth numbers. Well, same problem that Japan has. Baby boomers will end up retiring soon, but the population growth is too small to be able to handle this long term, as there are not enough working stiffs to support the retirees.

Surely it would swell the

Surely it would swell the rolls of young taxpayers to allow non-criminal aliens to stay?

okay, 1) Illegal immigrants

okay,

1) Illegal immigrants DO take jobs from Americans. How do I know? I was a contractor for years doing drywall, plaster, painting, interior work mostly, until several outfits run by people who hire illegally popped up and started under-bidding jobs and under-cutting competition. They'd charge 15-20% less than me, and only pay their guys $6 an hour for the work. The work was almost always excellent, btw. Don't tell me they don't take jobs people want. I wanted to run a legitimate business, but with an undocumented worker base as large as it is, it became impossible. I've got kids to feed.

2) This new law DOES NOT give permission for officers to pull people over or otherwise detain those who "look illegal", whatever that means. This law only gives the officer permission to ask for proper identification if someone is caught DOING something that either is illegal or looks like it could be connected to illegal activity.

3)MF, stop propagandizing! It really doesn't help your less-than-stellar reputation for telling the truth.

Let's see...I worked for a

Let's see...I worked for a company whose President was Irish-American, who gave his Filipina wife majority ownership so he could qualify as a minority contractor. He then proceeded to hire subs who hired illegal immigrants, and low-balled the hell out of his bids.

I questioned his I-9s, and I was told they were all in order. They weren't. He took a lot of shortcuts and lost his investors a boatload of money. If you want to look at the issue of illegal immigrants taking your jobs, look at the general contractors, not the subs.

Wait, for your #1 it sounds

Wait, for your #1 it sounds more like we should be going after the "companies" who hire illegal immigrants, since it was the company who hired them that took your work from you, not the illegal immigrants themselves... Also if the companies didn't keep hiring illegal immigrants then they wouldn't keep coming over the border illegally since they couldn't find any work. Just a thought.

1) That contractor is the

1) That contractor is the job-thief, not to mention acting illegally. Call them on it, rather than bitching and moaning on the internet.

2) Read it again; yes, it does. It doesn't require any other cause than "reasonable suspicion" that a person may be here illegally... of course, "reason" seems to be a flexible concept down there already.

3) He tells the truth; you're the one who has trouble with it.

boooooooo. Stop illegal

boooooooo. Stop illegal immigration.....

all i can say, is when did

all i can say, is when did we ditch the Constitution, Bill of Rights and all of the associated case law to support the fair and equal treatment of people.........AZ has given us some really good case law because they are sooooo far out in their reasoning, that the US Supreme Court continually over rules their unthought out actions.

Miranda still lives, as well as all of the other wonderful case we have from AZ.

Mark is usually spot on, but

Mark is usually spot on, but I'm disappointed that Police State Pete side-stepped the clear-cut racism in Arizona's new anti-immigrant law. All that focus on Canadians and then Brewer undermines the obvious: In Arizona, if your skin is white, you'll be alright; if it's brown, get outta town! FAST!

Come on now...Police State

Come on now...Police State Pete is just following the NEW Constitution....You are guilty until proven innocent. Pete knows also that businesses who hire undocumented workers will still remain untouchable.

I guess Mark Fiore sees

I guess Mark Fiore sees nothing wrong with illegals commiting crime and taking away jobs.

Illegals took your job? Was

Illegals took your job? Was it your life's ambition to work in a meat packing plant?

what are you talking

what are you talking about...
they taking away jobs that they don't want 2 do x less than 8 dollars the hour...like cleanig plublic restroom, gardenig, bringing 2 your tables the begetable, babysitting your babies, cooking your food at the restaurants, washing dishes, trying to make your life easy.what a shame!!!Arizona so close to Mexico so far away from god.
and also not only illegals are commiting crimes every body knows that.

This 'toon says nothing

This 'toon says nothing about that. The point he's making is that Arizona's law is so broad it allows anybody to be stopped and interogated for the smallest of reason.

i guess mark doesn't know

i guess mark doesn't know the meaning of the word ILLEGAL Why do i have to press one for English i live in AMERICA don't I ??? DUH Why are the labels on the groceries written in 2 languages Are you saying people from Mexico are TOO stupid to learn ENGLISH I DON'T THINK THEY ARE !!!!! HELLO EARTH TO BRAIN

Seems you rather missed the

Seems you rather missed the point of the cartoon.
The law is overtly broad so that even legal inhabitants can be stopped and bothered, because they don't look to be "legal".

You can't tell from the outside if a person is legal or not.
Meaning that it's extremely likely that this is going to lead to racial profiling. Consequence of which would be that Latino's would be the ones hassled most.

Said Latino's need not be illegal immigrants, heck some of these folks hail from families who have been in the America's since before your kinfolk even arrived in the country. (And Mark did mention this in his cartoon.)

Now if you think it right that US citizens get hassled, just because they look a certain way. Well, that says more about you than it does anything else.

But then again, I've seen thing annoying trend amongst a certain slice of your population to come to knee-jerk conclusions, as opposed to basing their opinions on the facts, they try to twist the facts to mesh with their opinions. And that rarely leads to good results.

Yeah! I really do like most

Yeah! I really do like most of Mr. Fiore's work. This time I think his focus missed the point on illegal immigrants.

Uh....yeah....they do look like Mexicans and yeah....they are illegal. People who don't carry some form of ID in most parts would be in trouble with the law anyways.

Undocumented people need to either get documented or prepare to be deported! Hey...If I was in Mexico illegally I wouldn't get this good a turn. I have seen an outpouring of sympathy for people who are illegal but have been here so long they are friends and neighbors in the community. Well....go sponsor these people and get them into the system if they aren't already! A lot of these people are here on long expired visas.

ummmm, what? Since when is

ummmm, what? Since when is it illegal to not carry some form of ID (except now in Arizona)? Sure, you need a license to *drive*, but now I have to carry an ID when I go for a walk? How about going for a jog, walking my dog, or checking my mailbox?

How about tracking illegals

How about tracking illegals and see where "they are stealing American Jobs" (what a fu******* joke) and arrest the people who are hiring them, stealing the tax money, and not paying a fair wage for work done.

Could we send ol' Pete down to Iraq or Afghanistan? A whole bunch of Americans entered there illegally about seven years ago and still refuse to leave.

In the next episode, you could perhaps explore Pete's own immigrant past...where did his family come from? Norway (like mine) or Germany? Maybe Pete should be visited by a Ghost from Immigration Past and be chased with shaking chains!! But who would be Tiny Tim?? Schwarzenegger? Sotomayor? I will contemplate as I pound on the piano.

Love it, Mark.
