In the case of Mexico, violence, including gun violence is a SYMPTOM of deep societal problems. Guns are not the cause.

Not surprisingly, you rather parrot official Mexican government propaganda because attempting to actually understand the problem would require effort. The ZETAS are one of the most ruthless mercenary gangs for Mexican narcotics traffickers. Many of the Zeta leaders have been identified by Mexican officials as former members of an elite paratroop and intelligence battalion known as the Special Air Mobile Force Group, formerly assigned to the state of Tamaulipas, to fight drug traffickers.

Several of them, according to the Mexican government, were trained at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga. The school, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, is the U.S. Army's principal Spanish-language training facility for Latin American military personnel.

SOA graduates are responsible for some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. In 1996 the Pentagon was forced to release training manuals used at the school that advocated torture, extortion and execution. Among the SOA's nearly 60,000 graduates are at least 11 military, including Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, and Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia. In Colombia, SOA graduates are working in close connection with the paramilitaries. In Honduras, SOA graduates just overthrew the democratically elected government and installed a coup regime.

In an Orwellian attempt to deflect public criticism and disassociate the school from its dubious reputation, the SOA was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC).

Just curious....are you glad that our "founding fathers" had access to their guns, or would you prefer that we all bow down to the king of England?

The other problem with arguing about statistics is that you can count dead bodies but the "lives saved" are impossible to count. I know people who have protected themselves with guns, but because there was no dead body, they'll never show up in any sort of statistic. What we can count are the increase or decrease in dead bodies as gun laws fluctuate like in DC.

First of all, that 90% figure is completely bogus... and has been PROVEN to be completely bogus. The figure is that 90% of the guns that the Mexican police ASK the ATF to trace are from the United States. Not even close to the same thing.

Second of all, less than half of THOSE are bought in legal FFL transactions.

Thirdly, even if NO guns were available from the United States, any mechanically competent 12 year old could make a tube smg from $100 worth of hardware store parts no NO special tools.
