Excellent one, Mark! I'm SO glad I didn't give my vote (that they don't count anyway) to this duplicitous, forked-tongue, neoconservative-at-heart, tell-them-what-they-want-to-hear-just-to-get-elected, political opportunist! I voted for Dennis Kucinich in the primaries and then voted for Ralph Nader in the general election. Both of these men are men of integrity and actually stand by their principles. They don't just say things to get elected. They both strike me as honest men that would follow through with what they spoke about when soliciting support during the campaign season. As Bill Maher said in a recent New Rules, "We don't need a third party, we need a FIRST party."
The week before, Bill Maher spoke at length how Obama promised one agenda pre-election and totally did the opposite once he got into office. I think Obama is a liar and a hypocrite.
Most of the country voted for change. Thats a lot of WE'S.
Strange all he ever says in his constant media forays is "I","I",and oh yes did I hear yet another "I". Well the "I"s have it not Bush anymore. It's time he stopped using Bush as an excuse for all his politics as usual. Mark is right to point out his flaws. He was brutal on Bush and you loved it. Obama is not God. He's just another political hack like all the rest.
Obama is showing himself to be a self-serving, principle-less, corporate shill who will not make any difficult decisions, will always defer to "bipartisanship" and the "center" because he doesn't want to provoke anyone, and will probably sellout his own wife to achieve his ambitions.
I am sorry that President Obama has not followed through on DADT and the DOMA - I can understand why it has not been at the top of his agenda; but I am dissappointed.
I can understand his point about the torture memos. He is after all walking a tightrope. No matter what he does, someone is going to be unhappy. If he releases them - it really will inflame Iraq, Iran and others and even though faced with facts there still will be 20% of America who no matter what evidence they hear - will believe that Obama manufactured it to make Cheyney & Bush look bad - (Can just hear Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck & Coulter now!)
On the other hand, he has only been in office since January - 6 months. He inherited a bad economy and I don't think when he was making all those promises he took that into account. Plus, when you are not the President, you are just campaigning - when you come smack upside down of the oval office, you find that there are lots of things you didn't know.
I think he is being more transparent in many ways. You can at least go to his website. He does take the time to explain things. I think he will eventually do the right things; but that he is kind of feeling his way. I'll give him 3 years - if I don't like the way things are going - then I won't vote for him again.
Whatever Obama's inconsistencies, I'm still willing to give him lots of slack. The Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld axis of evil-- er, administration -- took America down a deep, dark, stinky hole. It's going to smell pretty bad for a while until we can climb out.
Obama is the best chance USA has to survive, the world has hope in him, but if you white ant him, kiss USA goodbye. just another has-been empire! DIVIDED SATES OF AMERIKKA!
Mark, I have to say for once - you've got it wrong.
Don't ask, don't tell - if it had been defeated in the court, then the neocons would scream about judical activism. Better to take the slow road and do it legislatively, so that the Republican cries will only be sour grapes.
DOMA - see above. The courts are not the place to change legislation, unless it is directly in contravention of the Constiution. Let's see the Democrats put that majority to use, and change it the right way. I know they'll probably take away my American citizenship for this, but... litigation isn't the best way to solve a problem. *shocked gasp from the crowd*
Keeping Bush-era documents quiet - why should we publish yet more ready-made propaganda to help our enemies recruit impressionable young Islamic men? We all know it happened; are people so vicarious and morbid that they want the details, when it will do no good and much harm?
We have at least 3.5 more years of his administration; can we take some time, or are we children that must have everything now, now, now? If it keeps up, then you might have a point; right now, it's a little premature.
You are an apologist. The time to stand up for your principles is always now. Let's wait another 3.5 years to hold him accountable? What'll be your excuse then? It's election season and we need a unified front against the Republicans?
You would have crucified Bush for the same flip flopping. Your defense of Obama is amounts to personal hypocrisy. It's time to compare Obama's promises to Obama's actions, not to George Bush.
From FISA to health care, gay rights, and both wars, to Gitmo and torture investigations, Obama has honed his bait and switch politics to a fine art. The lesson is clear, policitians will never change America. It's up to the people.
America, the next time you want a progressive leader, VOTE FOR ONE!
And you're a spoiled child who wants everything now now now, or you'll throw your tantrum on the floor. Grow up, and learn to deal with the real world of national politics. One fight at a time.
Hipocritical for you to say "amen" when you wouldn't say "boo" about the crimes of the past 8 years. Being a bastard is okay if you happen to be a conservative, but suddenly a crime if you're not. Change your name to "champion of the conservative" and be done with it.
Mr. Bush's wars, economic policies, and handling of national 'crises' destroyed the US. I've said so innumerable times.
'Amen' here is to a fellow/lady who seems to be among the few to get Mr. Fiore's point: if all you can say about Mr. Obama is that he's 'better than Bush', it's truly no compliment to the man.
Others have claimed they'll remain steadfast in their support for Mr. Obama if he accomplishes 'even one of ten things' he set out to do. If you held conservatives to the same standard, Bush could
botch Iraq
botch Afghanistan
botch New Orleans
botch the deficit
botch national security
botch Gitmo
botch national park protection
botch financial regulation
botch social security, but...
pass a stem-cell research ban
and therefore we ought to support him because he accomplished one of the ten. That seems to be the 'standard' you're holding Mr. Obama to.
Stop thinking of this as a battle between 'left' and 'right'. This battle is called a 'dialectic'; its only purpose is to get people to waste time yelling at each other instead of at the real culprits.
Do as the poster above suggests: forget 'Bush' as a measuring stick and start writing your congressman to demand the president that you were promised. I'd be more than happy to support Mr. Obama's policies if they didn't effectively make him Bush 3.0.
Obama is doing what he has to do in a very hostile and unforgiving place. If you think he's wavering I suggest you review the history of Lincoln. He's playing the game - like fishing. Let em out a little and real em in. My feeing now is the same as it was that great day in Chicago when he addressed the crowd after the election results were in. That is - if he can accomplish just 1 in 10 of the things he has set out to do it will be an improvment, and change comes slowly. I ask everyone to continue to support him. The last thing he needs is to feel betrayed by The People while every day it is his job to confront the greatest problems of our time.
You have got to be kidding. You have really drunk the Kool-Aid when a politician does the EXACT OPPOSITE of what he promised and you're worried about betraying HIM! You are a citizen. Your job is to stand up for what is right for this country, not fall in love with a particular party of politician. I knew there were ditto-heads on the right, but I had no idea how many people left of center would be willing to turn of their minds and sell out the country for a personality.
I too am glad we are rid of Bush, but the job is not done. For goodness sake, DO YOUR JOB! Cripes, even Obama said "hold me accountable." Oops! my bad. That was Candidate Obama.
When I cast my vote for Obama I knew perfectly well then that he would be forced to give ground. The only Kool-Aid here is the pipe dream of having it all and realizing utopia in so many months. Obama cannot accomplish everything he hoped to - 1 in 10; that was all I ever hoped would be achievable. No society will ever achieve the ideal government for the people. There are too many very powerful and corrupt interests for that to happen. We fight against it but it is an inescapable fact of life.
This is as good as it gets - read the histories and compare Here and now, today even with all the BS is the pinnacle of individual liberty. I say that in DEFIANCE of all the cloak and dagger mischief. If today looks so bad to you then I say you've been blessed with a very sheltered life (and good for you). You’re worried about domestic spying? Read up on the McCarthy era. You're worried about torture? Read up on the reality of Manifest Destiny. We are a very long way from The Good Old Days.
My support of Obama has nothing to do with his personality, his color, his gender, or any other trivial attribute. I support him because he is trying to lead us in a new direction. Judgment is reserved until a couple more years pass.
Here is the job as I see it. We all need to make our desires clear to our state representatives; ask for less federal pork, cut back on all spending even though it hurts, pay the debt down, and above all don’t cave and give up. We can all do that much – there are no goons a Supreme Leader here that might kill you for daring to speak up so go for it!
Two faced? What exactly did you expect? Anyone engaged in politics who cannot play both sides of the fence is never going to accomplish anything. I think your vulgar post reveals that you are lacking in both maturity and wisdom. If you had ever haggled over the price of a used car you'd understand the necessity of what Obama is doing right now.
I want two new amendments... one stoping all the money and corporate favours flowing into capitol hill and one holding politician accountable to make a good faith attempt to honour campaign promises.
I won't hold my breath for either.
I am sorry Mark, but I think it is pretty petty to have an argument about 'don't ask don't tell' when the economy, iran, and north korea are in melt down. If any of those 3 get much worse, it will not be a matter ask/tell, it will be a matter of live/die.
This is so weak. Why bother posting at all? Don't ask, Don't tell could be repealed with the stroke of the presidential pen via Executive Order. He's got time for a Brian Williams/NBC tour of the White House, but no time to keep a campaign promise? Use your head!
