Though I don't consider myself to be very "political", I have now found the need to express myself on this page-- because, after all, the sixth listed definition for "political" in the Webster's Dictionary states: "of or pertaining to citizens: political rights." And I figure-- I'm a citizen...so political can pertain to me after all.

Being political in essence means that you are passionate about something. While listening to a podcast about vegetarianism (ok, I admit it-- I'm one of those dang vegans that's always spouting off about animal rights), I heard the following statement which gave me pause: If you're passionate about something, then DO something. Do SOMETHING, do ANYTHING... just don't do nothing.

So maybe this blog post on this website is my way of DOing something. Be it political or not, I am passionate about the rights of animals. If you are a "citizen", then this "pertains" to you. The next time you grab the turkey sandwich or you order the chicken fingers or juicy hamburger (that ain't "juice" by the way... but I digress), think about what kind of statement you are making about yourself. My humble, non-political opinion is that we are all "citizens"-- some of us were just chosen to be the citizens that we all enjoy eating. Because after all, it all boils (pun intended) down to this: you either love animals, or you eat them.

Mmmm... turkey sandwhich.

I eat them. No shame. It's what humans were made to do. I don't support animal cruelty, but I don't feel guilty about eating them.
Also, can a non- or semi- sentient being really be considered a 'citizen'?

What is a citizen?

You intrigue me Dramus. Rather, your statement, "I don't support animal cruelty, but I don't feel guilty about eating them" is specifically what interests me. I'm guessing that you must own your own farm? Humanely slaughter your own turkeys, cows, pigs, and chickens do ya? Because if you're one of the several billion people that eat meat the old fashioned way (i.e. go to any restaurant or grocery store in just about every country across the globe), you are, without a doubt, "supporting animal cruelty."

You see-- there are no laws in the United States that protect the billions of animals that are slaughtered each year to fill your tummy. If you dare, check out PETA's website (or any similar site), and watch a video on what happens to these animals before and during the slaughter process. It may not change your mind, but it will definitely turn your stomach.

Oh, and one last thing-- regarding your comment about whether or not a non- or semi- sentient being can be considered a citizen: Random House Unabridged Dictionary thinks so. Check out http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/citizen and read number 3.
