The Art of Parental Rights

March 29, 2023

A public charter school principal in Florida was recently given the boot. Her offense? Not sending a warning letter out to parents before an art teacher showed a 6th-grade class a photo of Michelangelo’s David statue. Two parents complained they weren’t notified and one called the sculpture “pornographic.” And a principal lost her job.

The Indictment(s) On The Way

March 22, 2023

Well, he might not be indicted (yet), but the writing is on the wall for Donald Trump. Legal tea leaves have been pointing to Trump getting indicted by the Manhattan district attorney in the case related to hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. It turns out that secretly funneling payoffs through your business in an attempt to keep an adult film star quiet as you campaign for the presidency may be illegal in New York and definitely has campaign finance implications.

Freedom-From-Woke Bank

March 15, 2023

Somehow, right-wingers were able to turn news of a bank failure (or two) into a conversation about “wokeness.”

As you’ve probably heard by now, a combination of too many treasury bonds, greedy bankers, dumb tech bros — and bipartisan legislation that weakened banking regulation — turned into a big scary bank failure that sent shockwaves through global financial markets.

The Killer App

March 8, 2023

Though he talks a good humanitarian game, President Joe Biden keeps cracking down on people fleeing danger and persecution in their home countries. One of the most galling examples of this is the recent requirement that people who are seeking asylum in the United States must first download the “CBP One” app to arrange an appointment at the border.

White Guy Grievance

March 1, 2023

Freedom Liberry

The movement to ban certain books is gaining traction in Florida and around the country. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is riding the book ban bandwagon to national fame (after first riding Covid misinformation bandwagon) as he prepares to run for president.

Rage Balloons

February 8, 2023

The Chinese surveillance balloon that floated across the United States recently was not exactly the cutting edge of super-secret spy technology. For one thing, there it was in plain sight for days, visible to anyone along its path. Spy satellites and other methods accomplish much more — and are more difficult to spot.

The Select Subcommittee of a Weaponized Jim Jordan

February 1, 2023

Rep. Jim Jordan has been unleashed as the chair of the “House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.” Let’s be sure we all keep the title of that subcommittee in quotes since it is really just a public relations arm of the Republican Party designed to broadcast the latest fever dreams of conservative persecution.

Anti-Woke Everything

January 25, 2023

In one little interview, a member of the Consumer Product Safety Commission called into question the safety of household gas stoves. This is by no means a new issue or something that was going to lead to immediate action to ban the stoves, let alone come to your house and rip them out.

Have A Nice Day, From The Corporation That Cried Too Much

January 18, 2023

Funny how so many of those “rampant crime” stories seem to disappear now that the midterm elections are behind us. Remember not too long ago when Walgreens was closing stores because the multibillion-dollar corporation just couldn’t keep up with all the shoplifting?

I’m Just A Speaker

January 12, 2023

Well, Kevin McCarthy got his wish of being Speaker of the House. It only took 15 separate votes and complete capitulation to the right-wing MAGA nutballs in the Freedom Caucus. It seems that McCarthy was willing to do anything (yes, anything) to land the “leadership” position he has apparently been drooling over for years.

Anti-Christmas Greetings!

January 4, 2023

As part of an ongoing political stunt, Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent three busloads of people fleeing persecution and/or grinding poverty to Washington, D.C., where they were dumped on the sidewalk in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence on Christmas Eve in 18 degree weather.

Out With the Old…
Dec 28, 2022

It has been, as they say, a year. While some undoubtedly good things happened in 2022, we’re still paying for the sins of systemic racism, plutocracy and Trumpism. (And of course, all three of those things often roll into one big toxic ball.)

Little Suzie Newsykins Sings: All I Want for Christmas
Dec 21, 2022

It turns out Little Suzie Newsykins wants a little more than a Trump indictment, even though that tops her (and my) Christmas list. The Department of Justice received a serious nudge from the January 6 House committee this week in the form of a criminal referral that listed four charges, including inciting insurrection.

Even Freer Speech

Thanks to Elon Musk, Twitter has become a test case of what happens when you put all the worst things about social media on one platform. Of course Facebook and Instagram have had their share of problems, but I just can’t keep from looking away when the world’s (formerly) richest man destroys Twitter while simultaneously touting himself as a free speech savior — all while ginning up the social media machine with right-wing racists, antisemites and conspiracy theorists.

Fast Track to the Gilded Age

Republicans and Democrats in Congress recently joined together to force rail workers to accept a contract with exactly zero paid sick days and one measly “personal day.” Thanks to the 1926 Railway Labor Act, lawmakers sided with (surprise, surprise!) multibillion dollar rail corporations instead of workers.

America’s ‘Zero’ Strategy
Dec 1, 2022

China’s “zero Covid” policy has sparked rare protests across the nation of nearly a billion and a half people. Which led me to think about our very own failed “zero” policy here in the United States. Zero corporate tax. To be fair, it’s not a policy per se, but is clearly an aspiration that has been achieved.

Thanksgiving for Billionaires
Nov 23, 2022

As we revel in the joy and wonder of Thanksgiving, let us be particularly thankful that a good number of billionaires are making asses of themselves. (I focused on American billionaires in this cartoon since Thanksgiving for Billionaires is, of course, a U.S. holiday.)

It’s Not My Fault
Nov 16, 2022

Just as the Republican Party is trying to distance itself from Donald Trump after a disappointing showing in the midterm elections, the twice-impeached, insurrection-inciting, soon-to-be-indicted former president is reminding the nation he is still the leader of the party.

Time for Some MAGA Self-Care
Nov 9, 2022

As I write this, the U.S. House and Senate are still up for grabs as votes are being counted in the midterm elections. The one thing we do know for certain right now is that there was no Republican “red wave” that so many pundits and pollsters had predicted.

Nutzy Explains Away Right-Wing Violence
Nov 2, 2022

Republicans are once again tripping over themselves trying to explain away the fact that their extremist rhetoric has radicalized people and led to violence. Whether it’s the loopy conspiracy theories of the MAGA right or the more tame “jokes” of moderate Republicans, they all seem to have difficulty grasping the facts.

The Republicans’ Closing Argument
Oct 27, 2022

According to some polls and pundits, it’s definitely not looking too good right now for the Democrats in the midterm elections. Republican candidates are leaning into inflation, gas prices and crime in an attempt to undermine the electorate’s confidence in Democratic candidates.

Your Very Own Social Network

Trump and Ye (aka Kanye West) are now partners in antisemitism who have both been justifiably banned from various social networks. Trump has gone on to form Truth Social and now Ye apparently wants to buy Parler, a failing right wing cesspool that had its heyday around the time of the January 6th insurrection.

Extradition Threatens Julian Assange (and Press Freedom)
Oct 5, 2022

With Julian Assange facing extradition to the United States, we’ll likely be hearing more about his case and see more protests around the world very soon. His legal battle against extradition from the UK to the United States has been winding its way through the British courts for months. If he’s brought to the United States, the WikiLeaks founder faces a sentence of 175 years for charges that include 17 counts of violating the Espionage Act.
