Cruelty is the point, of course. If we are scary and cruel enough to poor asylum-seekers, they’ll just go away, right? Oh, and there is the added benefit for the Trump crew that if the humanitarian crisis (read: the awful stuff we’re doing by keeping kids locked up) is to be stopped, we must fork over the money the administration demands. It’s another one of those cases where Trump helped create the problem, then tries to get what he wants by shutting down the government or stuffing kids in cages. He didn’t invent this tactic, of course, the Republican leadership has been doing this for years— although not with such sadistic glee. The truly scary part is that there are now so many people within the administration who are complicit, from architects of evil like Stephen Miller to poor hapless defenders-of-evil like Department of Justice lawyer, Sarah Fabian. And mustn’t forget ex-administration officials like John Kelly, who is now on the side of cashing in on these cruel policies.

Actually, he filed the paperwork for his re-election campaign on the day he was inaugurated and has been holding increasingly disturbing rallies ever since. Trump’s kickoff was just another diatribe of grievances and people who are out to get him— sprinkled liberally with outright lies. While the president rehashed much of the same rage as in 2015 and 2016, some of his comments took an increasingly ominous turn. He hinted again that big things were to come on the deportation front (which he also tweeted the day before). Maybe we should be thankful that Trump is still so hung up on Hillary Clinton. Let’s just keep him obsessing about Hillary and watching lots of t.v. and maybe he won’t actually implement more of his horrific policies. Sigh. A cartoonist can dream. Unfortunately, it’s become more than just a fascination with those tough guys he seems to like so much. Trump is bringing more than a touch of autocracy to his presidency. I’m not even talking about his stonewalling and refusal to cooperate with subpoenas and congressional oversight. Trump wants his wall but Congress didn’t give him the money, so he declared an emergency and got the funding on his own. There was bipartisan horror at Saudi Arabia’s killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — leading Congress to cut off U.S. support for the Saudi war against Yemen. Trump decided to declare an emergency again and turn over the keys to Raytheon, who will be working directly with the extremist Wahhabi regime to make more bombs. That’s just a taste of the Strongman-In-Training who occupies the White House. Here’s hoping this democracy thing prevents Trump from becoming a fully-fledged strongman. Never mind the earthquakes, pollution and general planetary destruction from burning fossil fuels. Why stop at Freedom Gas? Um, Trump’s base is already rallied. Ninety percent or so of Republicans support the guy. I think we’ve passed the point of worrying about rallying the base. Trump’s base is firmly in the palm of his hand. So why not convince Trump’s base to support impeachment? If you take Pelosi’s argument to its logical conclusion, it’s a slam-dunk. Pelosi thinks not impeaching the president will help Democrats win the White House. By that logic, impeaching the president will keep him in the White House. Therefore, Trump’s base should support impeachment. These are the problems that arise when you let electoral concerns preempt constitutional ones. Sure, keeping Trump around in the White House may give the Democrats an edge in the election and impeachment is risky — but a constitutional duty is a constitutional duty. This impeachment is a lot bigger deal than getting busted for, say, fooling around with an intern. Impeach away.

But don’t worry, Sen. Mitch McConnell says, “case closed!” Now that Attorney General William Barr has refused to turn over the unredacted Mueller report to Congress, the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Barr in contempt. Cue Donald Trump’s humongous don’t-ever-ever-back-down gland. This is not ending anytime soon. Sorry, Mitch. It sure looks like we’re well on the path to impeachment, provided Rep. It’s almost as if Mueller thinks there is some other body, some branch of government that is actually set up to handle this sort of thing. Granted, I was as frustrated as the next sane person that Trump wasn’t immediately indicted and frog-marched out of the White House. But that’s not how Mueller and this impeachment thing works, apparently. The special counsel made a point of saying that he was not going to throw around charges because it is Department of Justice policy to not criminally charge a sitting president. When he becomes un-sitting, that is another story. Now that the redacted Mueller report lays out what appears to be evidence of a president obstructing justice, it’s up to Congress. Specifically, Democrats, because Republicans have been replaced by the Party of Protect Trump. The only thing that is needed now is for Democrats to care more about their constitutional duties than political polling and winning an election. (I’m all for additional investigations— hello, Rep. Elijah Cummings— but let’s begin the impeachment process, too.) No sense in diving right into that balance-of-powers stuff and give the report directly to Congress first, right? Barr and transparency don’t exactly go hand in hand. Barr has given himself so much wiggle room for redactions, particularly the “nothing related to ongoing investigations” out— he does know we’re talking about President Trump, right? I’m betting the ongoing investigations loophole will keep tons of material behind those black bars. And if that doesn’t do it, how about information that could “unduly infringe” on people’s privacy. Vague enough for you? I’m getting the sinking feeling we’re in for an even longer haul and plenty of court battles in the months and years to come. I’m not too optimistic about the commitment to transparency of a potentially ethically-conflicted attorney general who inflames a conspiracy theory while prematurely declaring his boss’ innocence. After the Trump administration supported a legal fight to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, President Trump began to wage a campaign to make Republicans, the “party of health care.” Trump assured the nation that Republicans were sooooo close to the most incredible, tremendous, stupendous health care program that would be cheaper, better and more awesome than the evil Obamacare. After the trouncing Republicans suffered in the midterms (in large part because of their stance on health care), Trump’s allies in congress were loathe to take up health care yet again— in part because they didn’t, um, have a plan. Never fear, the Tweeter-in-Chief declared that the stupendous Republican plan that will make us all healthier and richer would be unveiled after we all voted for Republicans.
