Because Kevin McCarthy doesn’t want to lose his speakership, we’re headed for a shutdown.
Because the House of Representatives is being held hostage by the far-right “Freedom Caucus,” we’re headed for a shutdown — and active-duty military service-members will have to work without pay.
Because the Republican Party is now led by extremists, the program that provides supplemental nutrition to millions of women, infants and children (WIC) will likely have to close up shop for the time being.
(According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this program provides assistance to 39% of all infants in the United States.)
We are once again being held hostage by a group of far-right extremists who are trying to force their agenda down our throats — even though McCarthy and Joe Biden made a “deal” last spring to prevent this very thing from happening.
The House Freedom Caucus does not meet in public and doesn’t even make its membership list available to the public, yet millions of people are about to be impacted by their recklessness.
In case you’re wondering what the Freedom Caucus actually wants, just imagine the most conservative Republican ideas, then dial them further to the right, add loads more cruelty and there you have it — their list of (ever-changing) demands.
Even though the shutdown will be painful, it’ll still be better than giving in to the demands of heartless nutballs.
